The national park covers up the foothill of Mt. Meru that is the 2nd highest volcanic peak of the country. Mt. Meru is mostly assumed as the little brother of Kilimanjaro and one of the popular peaks between trekkers who are not fit enough to Climb Kilimanjaro.
Most of the Kilimanjaro climbers also Climb Mt Meru first for practice and get their body acquainted with the mountainous atmosphere.
It is surrounded by Ngurdoto Crater in the south-east which is grassland and Momella Lakes in the north-east. The Meru Crater funnels the Jekukumia River in the west.
Covering up 137 sq. km the national park is a small area but twinkling with the untamed game view. Mostly travelers ignore this national park due to its size, however, it is a great spot of Tanzania and a must-visit spot.
The national park is residing close to Tanzania’s gem Serengeti and Ngorongoro national parks. Hence, it is mostly combined with these national parks in safari itineraries.

An easy 40 minute drive from Arusha. Approximately 60 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport. The lakes, forest and Ngurdoto Crater can all be visited in the course of a half day outing at the beginning or end of an extended northern safari.
